Medvedev, the past champion, had failed in his previous six championship matches, comprising in Halle previously this season.

His defensive approach and frequent outbursts on court had prompted commentators to wonder if his capacity to perform at the highest level was over.

But the player has altered his approach in the past month, making an effort to advance forward and compete aggressively, reinforced by an better serving game.

He fought back from a break down in the opening set against the difficult opponent, securing 4 of the final five games to take the lead.

The pair exchanged breaks in the following set before Moutet, bidding for his first tour championship, took control to force a final set.

Moutet saved four early-game opportunities in a close deciding set before the Russian broke to 15 to close out the victory.

Suitably, Medvedev secured victory with a rally at the net, with his opponent failing to manage a return after over two and a half hours.
